　下北沢アーツでは伊山桂個展「Quiet as it's kept」を開催いたします。伊山桂は2001年岩手県盛岡市生まれ、2020年不来方高校普通科芸術学系美術コース卒業後、現在盛岡市にて制作を行なっています。2024年岩手県芸術・美術選奨賞に選ばれるなど、名実共に地元岩手を代表する若手作家です。
　東北の自然と文化に親しみ、作ることが身近にある環境で育まれてきた伊山桂の制作活動は多岐に渡ります。絵画では油彩やアクリル絵具のみならず、自ら探究した画材として卵殻も取り入れています。支持体もキャンバスや紙はもちろんのこと作業机にそのまま描いたり、家のような作品を制作し、その後それを展開して展示することもあります。その他、編み物、刺繍、ラジオ、地元紙への連載、今年に入ってからは店長として盛岡市に雑貨店兼ギャラリーを開店。その全てが、伊山桂が自分自身、人、景色、本など関わった全ての物に素直に向き合い、内面から湧き上がる何かを真摯に見つめ、即興的に時に何年も時間をかけ「作品」にしたものに他なりません。鑑賞者は、肩の力が抜けているからこそ見える物事の本質を感じ取ることでしょう。

アーティスト・ステイトメント
　以前、イップスやトラウマを霊現象として考えてみたことがありました。霊(個人的な過去や世界的なこれまでの記憶)に捕まることでトラウマを持ってしまうのではないかと思ったのです。
　ことのはじめは私がかなり霊感、というか霊勘を使って絵を描いている気がしていたからでした。筆を置く位置だとか、描く時間とか、とにかくなにかを、あるいは何かから我が身を庇うようにタイミングを見計らってこれまで描いてきました。そうするワケはそこここにいる霊に気づかれ、取り憑こうという変な気を起こされないようにするためだったのだと思います。これは「自壊」から逃れるために働く勘でした。しかし、いつも頭の隅には漠然と、それは良いことなのだろうかと疑問も抱いていました。「自壊」というチャンスを失っちゃいないかと。
　私が生まれたその瞬間から世界は反省と効率化をすさまじい速度で同時に進行させている際中でした。反省の副産物である統計的な予測から反省対象を現し、その大元をなくしていく動きは確かな効率さで今日の世界に多大な利益をもたらしました。しかし同時に、語られえないことが語られる機会に蓋をして失ってきたものもあるのだと私は思います。(自壊もその一つでしょう。)
　題名に冠した「Quiet as it’s kept」は作家のトニ・モリスンの小説「青い目が欲しい」冒頭の言葉です。「これは秘密なんだけれど」と訳される言葉は、秘密を抱くジェスチャーになっており、以降ささやかに、非常にゆっくりとした告白が続きます。そんな言葉に私は絵画や彫刻、造形物の存在を重ねます。描く、作る、見る。そのどれもが同じく秘密を抱くジェスチャーであり、自身や自身のようなものを崩す性格を持ちます。そして、それらは自身を紐解く行為にもなりうるのです。
　話は霊に戻りますが、私は彼ら(霊)に追いかけ回されるべきな気がしてなりません。とはいえ逃げ切ることは勿論だとも思っています。しかしこの霊と自分との良い距離感を保ち続けることは容易いことではないでしょう。私はそんな霊とのシビアな間隔の間に大切にしたい仕事があるようです。

Shimokitazawa Arts is pleased to present “Quiet as it’s kept,” a solo exhibition by Iyama Kei. Born in 2001 in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, Iyama graduated from the Art Course of the General Studies Department at Kozukata High School in 2020. Currently based in Morioka, he continues to develop his artistic practice while gaining growing recognition as one of Iwate’s leading young artists, having been awarded the Iwate Prefectural Art and Culture Encouragement Prize in 2024.

Deeply influenced by the natural environment and cultural traditions of the Tohoku region, Iyama’s creative activities span a wide range of media. In his paintings, he experiments not only with oil and acrylic paint, but also with unique materials such as eggshells that he has explored and developed hisself. His supports vary from canvas and paper to more unconventional surfaces—sometimes painting directly on his work table or constructing house-like structures that later evolve into installations.

Beyond painting, Iyama engages in knitting, embroidery, and radio production, contributes a serialized column to a local newspaper, and, since early 2025, has opened a shop and gallery in Morioka where he serves as manager. All of these endeavors reflect Iyama’s sincere engagement with hisself, with people, landscapes, books, and everything he encounters—transforming these experiences into works that emerge spontaneously, sometimes over the course of many years.

Viewers of Iyama’s work are invited to sense the essence of things that can only be perceived when one is at ease—where lightness and depth coexist.

Artist statement

There was a time when I wondered if the yips, or trauma, could be thought of as a kind of spiritual phenomenon. Perhaps trauma arises when one becomes possessed—caught—by spirits, which are, in a sense, personal or collective memories of the past.

It began with the feeling that I was using a sort of spiritual intuition—something like “spirit-sense”—when painting. The placement of the brush, the timing of when to paint; I was always carefully gauging these moments as if to shield myself from something unseen. I think I was trying not to be noticed by the spirits around me, so that they wouldn’t be tempted to attach themselves to me. This was a kind of instinct that helped me avoid “self-destruction.” Yet somewhere in the back of my mind, I always questioned whether that was truly a good thing—whether I might be missing an important opportunity for “self-collapse.”

From the moment I was born, the world has been accelerating both reflection and efficiency at an astonishing speed. Statistical predictions—by-products of reflection—have revealed what we choose to reflect upon, and in turn have helped to eliminate their causes. This has certainly brought great benefits to our modern world. Yet at the same time, I believe we have lost the chance to speak about things that cannot easily be spoken. “Self-destruction” may be one of those lost possibilities.

The title Quiet as it’s kept comes from the opening line of Toni Morrison’s novel The Bluest Eye. Translated as “this is a secret,” the phrase itself gestures toward secrecy—a whisper that unfolds into a slow, quiet confession. I see painting, sculpture, and object-making in a similar way. To paint, to make, to see—each is an act that holds a secret, that contains within it the potential to unravel and dismantle oneself. At the same time, these gestures can become acts of self-understanding.

Returning to the idea of spirits—I feel that perhaps I am meant to be pursued by them. And yet, I also believe I must keep running. Maintaining a delicate, proper distance between myself and these spirits is not easy. But somewhere within that fragile interval, I sense the presence of the work I most wish to protect.

Iyama Kei
Born in 2001. Lives and works in Morioka, Japan.
Iyama is interested in the act of making and viewing objects. Beginning with painting under the theme of “being there,” he creates and presents works in various forms, using materials that naturally suit each piece and context.
